To me, the game may be in Alpha, but it's already more complex and complete than so many mainstream "finished" games that I shelled out cash for.  Dwarf Fortress offers so much more replay value and original content and gameplay already that it was a no brainer decision: I've paid more money for worse games, why not support someone who was doing it right instead?

I remember buying KOTOR II and being so annoyed that you could tell where they had cut corners to push the "finished" game out sooner under pressure, and I felt cheated, like I'd been sold an unfinished project.  At least with Dwarf Fortress, we know that it's not going to suffer the same fate: when Toady (if ever) declares the game finished, there won't be any abandoned features or elements cut due to time constraints.

I'd sooner play under the blanket of a game, being half finished and constantly tweaked and improved, than with a game coming to a halt for limited play.  That's the console mentality. Penny Arcade ya to death.  Some games try to sell DLC at absurd premiums, like Bethesda's Horse Armor content for Oblivion.  DOH!  I mean seriously, if my kid bought that.. *rollseyes*  No I'm not gonna say it.

There is fun skipping pennies in a pond.  Lets leave it at that.

Anything given here is going to a worthy cause.  Bay12 isn't lying to people and offering up PHONEY MULTIPLAY and CASHSHOPS and then forcing us to HOST their game on our shell account, so they can sell more. Shady game companies are a dime a dozen, right now.  I won't name them, but ya better believe, Better Business Bureau and Trustlink, names them.

A game with multiplay can pull a few more bucks, than a roguelike.  Its a shame, its not real multiplay these bastards are selling, its something altogether different, when they sell SERVER code in their games, and then proceed to deny it right and left.  Theres no law in advertising.  Shame, really.  They pray on the ignorant Mom's, and Grandparent's, who only wanna put a smile on little Timmy's face.  They aint gonna read the fine print.  Not knowing that the game they bought is filled with misconceptions about online play and nonreturnable, nonrefundable.

Nice to meet ya, by the way.

Yeah, I held up Gamespots line for 40min's to return KOTOR II.  Succeeded too, even after the manager called security.  It was a FAR cry from KOTOR I, and I was damned sure not going to spend a cent on that mess.  I heard all kinds of threats about returning games being a federal crime that would have left a normal vendor up at night.  The manager had to report this as a loss, since I activated it, bleh bleh.  The game sucked, its the price he has to accept to be in the gaming business.

While there I heard his co-worker tell some mother, her console was only really going to last 3 years, and then she'd have to buy another. That her trade in games were now worthless.  I felt sorry for her, but I had my own battle to fight at the time.  I had to return another product from that same game developer, Mass Effect 1.  All the cutscenes got uploaded to youtube, all I had to do was put that in search, Mass Effect 1, and I saw the entire game.  I wanted my money back.

I've got a little list of of company's I won't give money too, now that we cannot return there crappola, or post criticism on their forums.  I view my online activity as a kind of payment, a payment, that money just can't buy.  Fanfaire.  That's why I'm here.  I'm a fan.  I sorta like chatting about a game, much more, well than more than playing it.  And like playing games with others that like chatting about them as well.

Sincerely, Knutor

So you're a picky asshole that demanded his money back for one of the best RPGs made this decade because he realized he could pirate it (not even the entire game, just parts of it)?

Classy.

You're the reason the industry is fucking PC gamers. Buy the games you like. Optimally, buy the games you already know you like (I still feel kind of shitty having bought Silent Hunter V based on the past successes of the series, and ending up with a mess of a game that was unplayable at launch and swiftly abandoned).

As someone who hates the direction that games are going (the non-refundable angle and all), explain to me why grandpa and little timmy give a shit that the game he wanted is nonrefundable and is a service that will be removed eventually.

If someone wants to pay X dollars for content, why do you have a problem with it? So long as they don't decieve in their advertising of the content (in other words, make sure to say "Yes, you're really gonna pay $10 or whatever for a fucking in-game horsie"), what's your problem? If they've decided that $10 is the price the market can bear, why should they sell it at $5. It's like saying that a restaurant shouldn't charge so much, despite its customers apparently being willing to pay however much they're charging.

Sorry for derailing the thread. I just get tired; imagine if someone tried to justify not paying for the latest album by their favorite band because "they're a big fan, and listening to it is payment enough". It's one thing to say "I listened to some, didn't like it, therefore I didn't buy it", or "The choice was pay for music or pay rent" is a valid excuse. Hell, even "I liked it, but it's not worth $15 to me" is fair. But to try to sell freeloading off a company that exists to make money because "my patronage is payment enough" is just low.

...So yeah OP, Dwarf Fortress is awesome, decide how much you want to donate (if at all) based on: How much money you have (don't go starving yourself to help Toady) and how much you like DF. Simple enough.

Might be safe to lock this before people start getting in trouble.
