Get over here, Stalker!

In 2006, a second explosion killed anyone near the Zone at that time. Excursions into the Zone revealed mutated animals and strange space-time anomalies. The year is 2012. You are a Stalker, an illegal trespasser who goes into the Zone illegally to take valuable artifacts, scientific information or just generally gain money. The work is hard, the death rate is phenomenal and the pay is amazing. You are very very very new, having just entered the Zone thanks to your friend Samurai. However, he died via some bastard guardsmen shooting him in the head. The bad news is that you expected him to last a bit longer since he is an experienced Stalker and knows more then you. The good news is that you got his stuff! He had a double-barreled shotgun, a Makarov and a broken PDA that doesn't mention where you are.

Huh. Very basic load-out. Perhaps he was lying about the experienced Stalker bit. Oh well, at least he has a map. You are currently in a forest. Fifteen meters south is a barbed wire fence that your (Forsaken) friend Samurai is hanging off of, to the south-east is a military outpost (The bullets came from there, so you probably shouldn't head in that direction) and to the north is what seems like a village. There are people milling about there, and they don't seem to be unfriendly.

Whatever shall you do?

Head North and see if you can't get some info about your surroundings from the some of the people there.

Outstanding name.

You head towards the town, shouldering your rucksack as you go onto the road, and head into the village itself. With seven collapsed houses and a dirt road, this is pretty much a dump. There are a few abandoned cars around, and a bus, but none of them seem to be in any working order. There are about ten stalkers about, and one of them is heading towards you. He is an armored coat, with the hood pulled over his head.

"We were hearing gunshots. I assume you are new to the Zone? Only newbies get shot at." The man says. "I'm Wolf, pleased to meet you."

"Shut up. Right, you have completely lost all respect I had for you. I am going to assume that you are a complete moron, then. Tip 1: Don't go into the military areas, you dumbass. They have guns, you have shit." Wolf sighs. "Do you need some training in how to not stick a gun up your ass and pull the trigger or is your one brain cell working today?"

You punch Wolf in the face and wander off to the Military Outpost. As soon as you get within fifteen meters of it, you get shot in the head by a sniper. Guess you shouldn't head that way. Well, you can't heed that advice for you are now deceased.

You resist the urge to punch Wolf in the face.

"Uh, sure, Wolf. What's your advice?" You say.

He sighs, then gets to work explaining. "Right, don't go near anyone who is stronger then you. Don't try to be a hero, you will get yourself killed. Anomalies are impossible to understand. Just grab the artifacts (they are the odd looking rocks near them) and run. You can see anomalies by throwing a bolt ahead of you, that disrupts the anomaly and causes it to appear. Walk carefully in areas you don't know well. If you feel the air shimmer, get out of there. The anomalies changed location and you need to throw bolts to make sure you aren't going to die. Every day at a random time, a blow-out will occur. Usually, an air-raid siren will go off and someone stalker will broadcast that a blow-out is happening soon. Just run to a cave, a building, anywhere sturdy, and just hide. Wait until the all-clear signal from either the siren or the radio. Bandits are bad, loners won't bother you if you don't bother them (That's what you are, but don't expect us to ally with you if you don't do something to confirm you are trustworthy), Freedom and Duty are factions who are pretty much the same and are pretty much neutral to you if you are on the other side. Ecologists are government protected, mercs are nasty and the military like practicing their aim on newbies like you.

"Well, at least you listen." He sighs.

The camp has a basement in the middle of it all filled with beds, most of the houses have nothing in them (The rest have merely inconsequential stuff, like watches and MP3 players) and there is a bunker in the back. While you are exploring, Wolf walks toward you.

"Actually, new guy." He says.

"Vlad, actually." You say, correcting him.

"Vlad, I guess. I lost my AK when I was searching for artifacts near the old farm. That's south of the railroad bridge. It's filled with Flesh, they are like mutated pigs. Nasty looking, nasty bite. There are a few anomalies about, too, so watch your back. If you go and get my AK, I'll give you this SMG. He taps his SMG. "Want the job?"
