Is it even worth it to have a fortress guard?
« on: February 05, 2012, 09:34:57 pm »

It seems that all fortress guards ever do is kill and imprison my dwarves for stupid things. Right after I assigned a fortress guard he started punching about 4 people to death for things they did years ago.

At the moment there's no point at all in having a fortress guard, except for the hilarity factor.

Don't some nobles get antsy if you don't have them?

Honestly, i don't even keep a military. Cage traps + More cage traps with some draw bridges keep the invaders out. Once you reach 200+ dwarves you can just seal yourself off.

What's the point of having invaders at all then?

I see that there are unhappy thoughts for lack of a guard or something like that for some nobles listed on the wiki, but this is either from a very old version of DF or is yet unimplemented.  Nobles will get upset if a mandate is ignored or failed and even more upset if no one is punished.

It's probably trivial to overpower this with happy thoughts though.

You could also set some cages or chains as prisons. If the chain is close to a bed, chair and table, the prisoner won't get unhappy from the lack of it. Put some pricy statues near, make him happy. If you can stockpile some booze nearby, perfect. Only unhappy thought will be that he doesn't have work

It's from an older version. Back in 40d some of the higher up nobles got unhappy if their weren't enough fortress guard IIRC. Now days there isn't a point in having a fortress guard, or even in having a sheriff/captain of the guard at all.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Fortress guard can be useful for handling tantrums.

Honestly, im not sure. I can't wait for the the cage trap nerfs.  As it stands invading goblins are more of a nuisance then a threat.

Well, yes, they're not much help with spirals. But if there's just one dwarf tantruming, a proper justice system can help to isolate him. There are other ways to do that, of course, but it's handy to have it done automatically.

EDIT: Plus, it can be handy to have a force around that's less lethal than your regular military. Of course, there's nothing stopping you from just making any squad non-lethal, but personally I find that having one squad explicitly labeled as the guard helps me remember which one is which. At one point I tried setting up the guard as a crossbow squad, on the theory that when dealing with other dwarves they'd melee, but I could use them as marksdwarves against military threats. Results were... not encouraging.

It sounds like the guard'll be more important in the upcoming release, what with vampire infiltrators and so forth.
