Dwarf Fortress on an Android E-Reader Tablet?
« on: February 03, 2012, 03:25:32 pm »

I recently figured out how to put gameboy and SNES games on my android E-Reader tablet.
Is there a way to get Dwarf Fortress on there?

Even assuming that you somehow do manage to get it to work, you are only gonna be able to support like 15 dwarves and then your FPS will be like 10.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

dfterm on a pc and a putty app might be the only way to make it work.

I'd only recommend trying to run DF on your android if you feel it hasn't been bursting into flames as much as you'd like.

This is a fantastic quote and I'm going to sig this.

OT: Hahaha, no. Computers chug with DF, there's no ways in hell an E-Reader will be capable of handling it.

I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.

Is there a way to get Dwarf Fortress on there?

Beyond the (less than polite) responses toward the negative, there is one way to do so. You'll need to see if it has two things:
  • A (reasonably) full keyboard interface, preferably hardware-based
  • A vt102-compliant telnet client for your platform, with colours
If you have both of them, you can get it running by starting DF on a host computer and controlling that session via dfterm. It's a roundabout way of doing it, but it's next to impossible to run DF directly on a standard tablet or smartphone; it lacks both suitable hardware and, if I'm not mistaken, a suitable processor architecture (IIRC, DF cannot run on ARM).

Hah. Yeah, you're right. This is the forum full of people known for taking the harder option just because it's there. Support for something crazy like this should be given - not derision, even if the idea seems bonkers. (No, I'm not being sarcastic, I swear!)

I mean, a few months ago there was a blind guy here wanting to play DF by touch and hearing and we all thought it was awesome.

I'd be amused to see this happen. I can't imagine a framerate higher than one every three or four seconds, but hey. Worth a shot.

Adventurer mode might be worth a shot with it, though.

I used to play nethack and SLASH'EM on an iPod Touch. Just the other day, I was thinking about suggesting this to Toady.

Pretty sweet that they managed to get it running, though even the intro seemed slightly slower then normal to my eyes. :P
