So...... can he still bookkeep if he recovers  :P.

This info is outdated by a number of patches (however it still happened in the current overall version) but 'no'.  I had a dwarf who lost both arms in an attack and he recovered (SOAP!) but he wasn't able to do anything (by coincidence he was my former bookkeeper, but was unable to go back to work).  He just milled around (being quite happy actually) in my dining hall until building destroyers destroyed my dam and flooded my fort.. He died fighting a giant cave rat in a flooded craft hall.. He will be missed.

You ask for a use for the mighty power of carp-infested waters.

I come out of lurking to give one to you.

Your answer?  Trade Depots.  "What?" You say, "How could a river possibly impact my trade?"  That, sir, is an excellent question.

Have you ever had that awful feeling where you don't want to deal with moving goods into your Trading area, or just don't want to interact with those green, leafy, communist fools?  You have?  Well, I have a solution. Flood chamber with a drainage grate back into the river, which will also conveniently house your Depot.  You must, of course prevent fleeing escape discouragement with the accommodations you provide, so I recommend a drawbridge over a pit, so that once your friendly neighborhood traders enter, they can't leave.  Just set up a simple set of floodgates and give yourself access to the equipment-pickup area with a locked door.

1.) Pull lever
2.) Watch as innumerable beings die before the might of the harnessed power of the river
3.) ???
4.) Profit!!!

Seriously though, flooding traders has almost no repercussions, and is a fairly simple thing to set up if you have a river.

You all forgot about one more way to kill your dwarves with river: ice. Dwarven popsicles for everyone!
Or, come spring:Urist McIceSkater had drowned! * n
Ice will also let non-swimming baddies cross the river.

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

Once you've made your river completely safe, something utterly unrelated will destroy your fort.
