well, on advice from you good folks, i tried digging down to what looks like the second cavern.
so far... elk birds, but we'll see what pops up.

Life (in dwarf fortress) is a cocophany of flavours, each more succulent than the last - why not sample them all?!

Worst you'll find is forgotten beasts, and that's pretty much Toady playing russian roulette with your fortress.
All things considered the surface is likely more dangerous then the underground, ignoring forgotten beasts  and titans, simply because of goblins....with whips. And you find those pretty much everywhere.
