I tried out a terrifying biome on my 3rd try at this game...
« on: November 09, 2011, 12:31:56 am »

i was massacred by beak dogs before i had a hole dug to put my food in.
ever since then, i've stayed away from such places, imagining them to be too difficult for me to mess with.
but it's been a few months, and i think i've gotten pretty good at this game.

should i try it again?

i HAVE been feeling like i kinda need a kick in the ass before i'l start up my military...

ok, then!
since it's a unanimous vote in favor, I'm gonna go for it. I'll even keep a running log of how it all goes down, along with screenshots, (if someone tells me how to do that).

You should definitely do it again.  You may or may not die horribly within the first few minutes, but if you survive long enough to get underground, you ought to have a good run.  I prefer embarking in Terrifying locales myself, though about half the time it ends in horrible, macabre Fun within the first season.

Also, for screenshots, it ain't elegant, but I've been trading them with my friends just by hitting the print screen key and pasting into microsoft paint.

Really the only difficult part about such an embark is the very beginning when your dwarves are exposed to the dangerous outside world. Carve out a safe place, line some traps and get a military and surviving in evil places like that should be a cakewalk.
Go for it, best way to learn the value of setting up good defenses quickly!

I'd also recommend bringing a militiadwarf on embark.  Axes tend to be good against undead, in my experience, and definitely find the points to start with a piece of headwear, at least a copper helm, to guard against a lucky kick in the head for said militiadwarf.

6 of my starting 7 were +5 shield and +1 fighter, the 7th did ALL the work except for woodcutting, including making wooden shields for the rest.
we brought enough wood for 7 beds and 6 shields, 6 copper axes, and a butt ton of food and liquor, expecting the worst...

more to follow.

beak dogs... should i try it again?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Beak dogs make short order of an open fort, I agree.  But don't let that stop you from trying again.  Try again!

well, its been almost 2 years now, and i must say, im fairly disappointed.
Within the first 6 months, my squad was near legendary, yet the meanest thing ive seen so far has been a dark gnome who did not bother us at all.
i may retry.

Go deeper. You may end up finding some very intresting skeletal friends.

Cavern evilness is totally independent from surface biome, I've had skeletal draltha herds in a calm embark before.

If you start with plenty of wood, seeds, and food it should be easy as you will never have to go above ground at all. Make sure that your food stocks are each at *1, 11, 21, etc to get the extra free barrel.

Are you sure? Most of my evil embarks have caves filled with undead creatures.
