In my current fort KingdomEarth there is a large town built above ground around my fortress. The town contains various buildings used for various purposes. Right in the centre is a park surrounding a large columned temple. The temple contains statues and is a statue garden. The surrounding area is protected and can be viewed from the multiple windows in the temple. The park is about 70 by 70 I would guess. I like having an area of green that is not:
1. Stained with the blood and vomit of invaders.
2. Covered in roads, pump buildings, defensive lines and military forts.
3. Subject to flooding by random liquids.

I chop down enough trees to make beds for my population. That's about it, unless I lack metal, in which case I use trees for bows/crossbows and bolts/arrows.

I don't think I've ever cut down excessive amounts of trees. Except when I'm clearing land for a surface castle.

Build a series of tunnels and rooms in the dirt layer for plants to grow. Throw random things in, such as animals, goblins, and elves. Check how everything is going every so often. Record everything for the sake of !!SCIENCE!!.
