I don't think dwarves will ever throw melee weapons at enemies, I'm afraid.

(You may throw them with good results in adventure mode, though)

Dwarves never throw anything, ever. Unless they're tantruming.

Would be fun stuff for an adventurer though.

Nothing in fort mode throws anything except tantrumers and wrestling throws.

You could mod it as a ranged weapon like a crossbow, and just use more pilums as ammo. Make it so the thrown pilums have the same attack as the melee one, and then even if they run out of "ammo" pilums, they still carry around their "weapon" pilum and can use it in melee, though they may just be inclined to run back for more ammo (or not, considering how buggy crossbows are).

A dwarf will not naturally use ammo as a handheld weapon.

He means cheat and make "pilum" crossbows and "pilum" ammo. If the two weapons attack identically, who's to say the former isn't just the held version of the latter?

That's possible, but I'm not sure how the ammo production would work.  Produce 25 pilum ammo?  They also don't cross-use.  Picking up ammo doesn't let you bash people.  A bit hax, but, meh, whatever.

Mod in an atlatl that uses the Thrower skill for ranged attacks, with ammunition equivalent in size and lethality to a shorter, thinner spear. Seeing as there's currently a bug that lets your dwarves wield an apparently infinite number of different weapons simultaneously the effect will be much the same as javelins thrown by hand.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Wikipedia said that a traditional atlatl could hurl projectiles at speed of over 93 mph. That's the fastest baseball pitch ever recorded!

Actually, I'm inclined to make a "Dwarven Atlatl" that will be composed of steel and blades.  It allows the user to hurl a few spear-sized volleys at the enemy, and then hack at them with the shaft - which is modded slightly so that the crook at the top is more of an axe head.

Throwing axes are also quite dwarfy. Andif you go the "Fake Weapon - Fake Ammo" way you can imagine the user always keeping the last one for melee. Or you can arm them with lets say "Short Sword + Throwing Spears" (one weapon) which uses throwing spears as ammo and keeps the sword for melee.
