Oblivion combat could be summed up as, run backwards, cast the fireball spell you're given freely at the beginning forever. This continues to be a viable, working method of defeating any number of enemies, any kind of enemy, until the end of the game.
Yep.

...That's exactly how I did combat in Morrowind as well, and all other aRPGs I've played that lacked a functioning dodge mechanic. So, basically all of them except Risen. And maybe Gothic II. It was so long ago I played it, I honestly can't remember.

edit: stupid phone always making me type wrong.

Don't hesitate to go into oblivion gates early. You can get some extremely nice magical items from there.

There are a limited number of gates, though, and the rewards scale with you upon entry, so it's more rewarding to walk in at a high level.

There's two gates that you need to destroy in the main quest (before you happen to destroy them all) if I remember correctly, and honestly that will probably hold you over for a while.

So long as you don't finish the main quest, gates respawn every [insertnumberhere] days.  3 if I remember correctly.  Might be wrong.

There comes a time when you must take off the soft, furry slippers of a boy and put on the shoes of a man.
Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

There's a limited number of gates placed at set locations, yes, but they do re-open. The way I think it works is that specific gates become active at specific points on the main quest, and whenever there's a respawn in the region the game makes a roll for each active gate to see if it actually opens. If... that makes sense.
