You stare quietly at the coated man. The man waves his hand and asks, "Hi?" His hand slowly stops waving and then falls back to his sides with a "Umm... okay."

"Hello," you finally reply. Your voice is so raspy. You feel like you haven't talked in a long time.

You pull the mirror shard out of your pocket and stare at it. You see your face and then slowly rotate it so you can see the coated man's reflection.

"Where am I?"

"Well," he says, lifting up his hands, "You're here."

You stare at him some more.

"But, more specifically, I would call this the Gate. And me the Gatekeeper." He steps out of the way of the door, making the point clear.

"That still doesn't answer my question." Your throat hurts when you talk.

The Gatekeeper smiles. Or at least you think he did. "I know."

You both stare at each other for a while, until the Gatekeeper speaks again.

"How about this," he says, speaking slowly, "I'll trade you."

You raise your eyebrow.

"Maybe you want to get through this door. Maybe you want to go back. Maybe you want... something else." As he says those last words, you suddenly visualize Ana. "I'm a trader by nature. You just have to offer the right things."

You look through your pockets, holding up the mirror shard and the compact for the Gatekeeper to see.

"What do you want?" Your voice wavers.

He looks at the items displayed. "It's not really what I want. It's what you offer. But, it might not be enough."

Your head spins a little, and the compact opens. You try to turn away before you see her again, but to your surprise, it only reflects you this time.

You close the compact.

You push the issue aside. "Where is here?"

"I already didn't tell you." He seems to be holding a smirk. Maybe.

"What do you want?" You look at the mirror shard and the compact. "Is there something I can get you?" Your voice has steadily gotten raspier now.

The Gatekeeper laughs. "You offer a trade. That's what I want. But, what do YOU want? Nothing is more valuable than what you want. And that's that."

You try to ask him again, but he merely holds up his arm to signal silence. He doesn't plan to say anything more.

You look down at your shoes. Shoes? You don't remember wearing shoes. They're untied though. You quickly lace them up.

You look at your shoes. They're pretty beat up. An understatement, really, but as close to describing them as you can get. They're tied up in terrible loops.

Other than that, your shoes are... well, shoes. You wear them.

The Gatekeeper examines you closely. You feel like you're wasting your time.

A far off voice calls for you. Not Ana's, but it's ringing in your head.

Alright, it's time to bite the bullet.

"How do I find Ana? How can we both get back to where we belong?"
