I kinda like the image: dwarves dodging around a room while spears shoot out at them from every direction. It would only be better if they sparred while standing on the tips of the spears.

and danger rooms extract their price in the blood of infants.

And pets.

But then again, that's more of a bonus...

I'd like to say that I haven't made one on moral principle--they do sound munchkinny--but the main reason I haven't built them is because I struggle with the military in general.  :p  My preferred training method is:  embark on an area teeming with hostile wildlife; make any immigrants with useful traits  woodcutters/herbalists.

Tried 'em. Love 'em. This is how Dwarf Fortress was meant to be played.

I guess the sticking point is people calling it an exploit. The word has cheaty connotations, like it's something blatantly out of line with the game design. If it makes it too easy for you, that's cool, and more power to you! But it's not quite the same thing as piling 50 pages of stone onto a single tile. Which I am also guilty of because it's better for my sanity. X)

I sometimes use rooms similar to these danger rooms for immigration control. Does this count?

I rather like how the military skills are much slower to pick up than they were in 40d so I don't use them for training.
