SVG 'n PNG.

PNGs all the way. Too bad there's no animated PNGs, so I'll have to settle with GIF for that one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animated_PNG

Of course IE doesn't support 'em. Tststs.

As a general rule, I tend to save my work in the GIMP native format, XCF, then either exporting it to PNG or GIF if I want to put it on teh interebz.

It says something about the intelligence of this forum that we've all voted PNG. Mostly. Thank you, everyone.

I would've voted for BMP if it was an option.

I feel stupid now for not noticing the difference... I usually save my works into jpeg because that is the extension I see the most...  :-[

PNG for lossless stills, all the way.
APNG for lossless animation.
JNG philosophically for lossy stills, but in real life practice JPEG/JFIF.

APNG is also nice for packing sprites into a single file.

SVG for vector, mostly to later render as PNG of different sizes.

TIFF is a container in containers for containers of [insert proprietary image encoding here], making universal TIFF support just plain impossible.  Go download TIFFs from patent offices of several nations, have fun trying to read them all with one viewer.
I don't consider it in the same class as the others.  It's closer to the intent of DICOM, or other meta-data containers.

JPEG/JFIF is decent for some specific purposes, but highly overused, and out of date.
JNG is superior to JPEG/JFIF in every way, but then there's browser support to worry about.  If you support JNG, you may as well fully support MNG.

GIF is a waste of time.  Burn All GIFs!

MNG is a noble attempt, but is too bloated to compete with APNG, yet too simple to compete with MPEG-4.
It's very hard to make small, efficient, patent-free video codecs.

But you left out BMP... and PCX... and ICO... and TGA... and...
Never mind.  Those all suck.

I wouldn't vouch for APNG for animation as many programs I've used do not support it at all. A real shame.

SVG's are great, but they don't seem to be supported by all browsers, and a lot of programs seem to be terrible at printing them.  I kind of wish they were a little more mainstream.

That said, I use them quite a bit at work to generate patient reports, because its an easy format for me to manipulate/automate on the fly.  :)

.png all the way. I use Prezi a lot in my lecturing and teaching, and they handle the "zooming around" bit a lot better.

xcf (working), gif (published animations), png (published bitmap stills), svg (published vector formats)

Those are my bread and butter, and I love them all.
