What is your favorite image format?
« on: December 14, 2011, 10:33:34 pm »

Maybe its because I mostly mess with photoshop a lot, but for some reason I just really hate JPEGs especially when its compressed using anything other than highest quality.
I love PNGs though for their lossless compression and to an extent, GIFs, but the fact that they only work with 8-bit coloring (or at least photoshop doesn't allow 16 or 32 bit) tends to throw me off a bit.
Recently also started using TIFF due to how its able to save information from multiple layers, but it's still in an experimental stage for me.

So what is your favorite image format?

edit: Darn I forgot to include .bmp format, but I can't edit my poll.

PNG, easily~
JPG is alright at first, but like a morbidly obese man in a thong, once you see the artifacts, you just can't unsee them~

PNGs all the way. Too bad there's no animated PNGs, so I'll have to settle with GIF for that one.

Huh. I had no idea someone could have a "favorite"

They are used for their own things basically.

This isn't the 90s, most people don't need the space saving provided by using JPGs~

PNG. The format has come far enough that other formats have become obsolete.

I did not know of this. I feel so stupid now. Then again, it isn't as widespread as animated GIF.

Still, I feel very stupid.

Not really TIFF, but TIFF is like Robertson screws:
Great, but too proprietary to have really taken off~
PNG just needs multi-layer support~

PNG

I almost always optimize my images into this format (GIF for animations and JPG when I, or my client, can give less a crap). Crisp, clean, cheap on space most the time, has a good bit-range (for reductions to further cheapen the space the files take up sans quality loss), and among my favorite features, a lack of artifacts, and allowance for transparency with full-color support, and not just 256 colors.

Really helps when combining images or using the transparent backgrounds for programs like Rainmeter and such.

PNG does need multi-layer support, I agree.

PNG is cool, but SVG (Scaled Vector Graphic) is where it's at. I can seemingly only operate InkScape by punching, but the stuff it spits out is pretty cool. Infinitely re-scalable pictures with no quality loss.

PNG, I'd say.

Propert support for alpha channels, lossless compression and wide support are all good things.  That's for general purpose use though.  When it comes to writing programs to work with an image format though, BMP wins because it's simple.  I can say from personal experience that PNG is a nightmare, and I'm pretty sure JPG is even worse.

If only MNG was a commonly supported format.  Then GIFs could just go and die.

PNG. It loses no quality, which I like, and also makes simple images EXTREMELY SMALL. I have a 35KB 800x600 image that is 114KB in JPG form, 134KB in TIFF form, and 68KB in GIF form.

I say PNG all the way.
