That's what was confusing me at first I think.

I believe what you're telling me is that the save without the season attached to it is the one being saved to, and then the seasonal saves are also presented below it.

The misleading thing is that the first save always shows (embark year)+1, and never whatever year you might actually be on.

The annoying thing is that once I load that seasonal save, if I had played and saved past that point previously, it would now have been lost.

You should always load the EXACT same file every time.

Unless you have a problem.  Then ignore the in game system and manually rename the directories.
