But first we need to determine what sentience is.
Sentience is the ability to feel. The term you're looking for is sapience. Self-awareness, perhaps?

Human: Do you feel?
PichuBot: My robot mind has no feelings.
We got self awareness down.

Ah, but is it truly self-aware, or is it simply programmed to claim and pretend it is?

It actually bases it's knowledge over what it learns from chatting with humans, which can't really be considered programming as much as experience.

Then it has been told what to say, without realising the true meaning of it.

When machines have free will, can think in abstract advanced concepts and have their own moral structure is when I'll be panicking.

EDIT: Typo.

Likely when a robot can do that it'll begin panicking too.

I mean, if you made a robot for shoveling horse dung, would your now out-of-work stableboy honestly complain?

Tell it to the guy without any income.

We'll need someone to oil the shovelbots.

Where there's surplus food and goods, there's something to be done for it, and where there isn't there's something to be done about it.
