One second long lapses in FPS?
« on: December 09, 2010, 04:58:10 am »

I periodically have a problem where my fort will be chugging along at a nice, healthy 150 FPS, but every 30 seconds or so it'll freeze at 1-2 FPS for about a second.

At first I thought it was my computer, but it doesn't happen when loading up my terrifying desert embark, which is significantly bigger. I've tried DFhacking all of the blood away, I've checked for draining caverns, and I've even unforbidden everything on the map to see if it was a pathing problem. I don't think it is.

Any ideas?

Seems to be a relatively new bug in the system. This has only recently been reported several times as a problem in version .17 and .18 that the game periodically freezes, but doesn't do so reliably. I've seen it on a couple embarks, and just abandoned the embark. My current fort in .18 hasn't had this problem, and I'm on year 5 with 179 dwarves.

Turn off temperature and see if the lapses disappear. Might have to do with the seasonal changes.

For some reason, for me the freezes only happen when a unit either enters the area or dies, though the dying part I only see when it's an animal that's just died by butcher, so maybe it's just the sudden explosion of new items.

I have had the same problem with two forts, disabling temp didn't change anything.

I have this issue in adventure mode, but it occurs when moving between sites.

I also have this in fort mode, but only when I move up from 4x4 to 5x5 or larger. (This is in .16, anyway)

this happens when a bunch of water is about to thaw or freeze.  It also happened when I left a lever to a bridge on repeat by mistake.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

yeah i do see it at thaw/freeze.  that lag spike has always been there though.

I dont get this huge slowdown every 30s or so in Fort mode, at least not encountered it yet.

I do see something similar often in adventure mode however, usually if my guy has stopped moving and i give him a new direction to walk, the game locks almost entirely for maybe 2 seconds before running as normal

I wish I had something cool to say about this.  Because it's really cool.

I remember having this kind of problem shortly after DF2010 launch. My solution was to plug-in my external hard-drive. Don't know why but it worked...

I'm getting the exact same issue. It's very random, making the game either completely fine or completely unplayable. And it doesn't just happen at season changes either. I think it's related to the pathing loop fails that keep popping up in my errorlog, but I'm not sure.

Yeah, in the future you probably shouldn't strike the earth quite so hard
