This is simple - so simple, I was actually surprised it wasn't in the game already.

I was thinking, hoping, that floor grates would have the background color of the stuff beneath them - like, if there's a river of magma or blood underneath, the background of the grate would be red, if there's water or a river of ichor, blue, black if there's nothing, green if it was built a Z-tile above grass or whatever...

Basically, I built a magma cathedral in my fortress with magma running underneath floor grates and extended it so that my Forgemaster's quarters had his own private forge in them and a grated magma channel all around the room. I think it would be absolutely bitchin' if they had the proper red glow o' doom from underneath them.

I don't know how easy this is or isn't to do? It might be nearly impossible, without some major coding, especially since df isn't very graphicsy. I suggest picking a red stone to make the grates until/if it gets implemented though.

No, the background of the grate tile, not the grate color itself.

I know DF handles tile backgrounds and all, the question is whether it can easily be made to grab the color from the tile below.

Another option before this gets implemented would be to use a visualizer like stonesense. It does transparency for certain items and materials. Toady might get to items like this but I'm guessing it will be quite a long time before it happens.
