Another Magma Piston Question
« on: October 08, 2010, 11:21:24 am »

So I'm about ready to deploy my magma piston and push a lot of magma up about 70 levels. Since my caverns are in the way, I can't push it up all the way to my fortress.

What I would like to know is if I Construct walls in the caverns to account for the gaps, will it cave in and fall with the piston?
Can I leave the center of the piston hollow or will magma get trapped there?

This is a feature, not a bug, correct?
You're playing Dwarf Fortress.  There isn't much of a distinction.

If they are part of the piston they will deconstruct when the pillar falls. Any gaps in the piston will fill up with stone/soil from above. so the top of your pillar will no longer be flat, which will most likely cause the magma to flow down the sides of your piston.
If there aren't too many hollow tiles above/below each other you can ensure the top of the pillar ends up flat by either leaving that much unmined stone on the top of the pillar (in the appropriate places) or constructing walls or leaving that much at the base.
When done at the base it obviously reduces the volume of magma transported and for it to be done at the top you need enough unmined material above the pillar.
