The strategy that works the best for me is spacing my cities out, but not behind a different empire's, as I want it to eventually grow to the point where my territories are max 2 hexes apart from eachother due to culture. I improve every single tile, which is how I do it. I usually put cities anywhere from 10-50 hexes apart.

Can you eventually name your first cavalry unit (hopefully knights :D) Charlemagne's own? And eventually name a city Aquitaine? (Notice a theme? :P)

Sorry for double posting, but I know Warhammer IRL, and I just came by to say that he had an internet problem (mostly with steam) that resulted in the loss of the save file in civ V. He's a little busy now, so I just thought I'd tell you guys, sorry :(.
