I had a stack of elephant meat roast worth 22600 DB.

All fine and dandy, but overall you won't make as much per season on elephants as you will on steel serrated discs unless you can butcher about 10 elephants a season.  One weaponsmith can churn out about 15 serrated discs per month, around 45 a season, even if they're only somewhat competent.  Even if those were all no-quality, you'd still be making 340,200 DB worth of blades a season (more likely you'll make around 2 to 4 TIMES that).  Friendlyfire has 172 large, steel serrated blades on hand from on-and-off manufacture, and only ever needs 2 to 8 of them at a time to buy out entire caravans since most of them are at least +quality+ level.

Hmm. I always found that starting with one proficient stonecrafter, building him a workshop and supply depot as soon as I arrive, setting him to make crafts and then forgetting about him forever supplied me with more than I would ever need. Eventually I usually start selling excess armor and weapons, but only to get rid of them or draw more migrants.

What do you really need to turn Elves into Dwarves? Mutation could make them grow a beard; insanity effects could make them evil-minded, aggressive, tree-hating cave dwellers, and instant, full necrosis of their lower legs could make them short.

Obviously, you need more dwarven syrup.  Masterwork dwarven syrup roasts can sell for huge amounts, and if you pad those with massive elephant meat stacks, you can easily get hundreds of thousands of dbs.

Personally, I like [DF] because after climbing the damned learning cliff, I'm too elitist to consider not liking it.

Indeed. My ideal meal featuring elephant meat would consist of
1. Elephant Sweetbread
2. Dwarven Syrup
3. Dwarven Cheese
4. Sunshine

I believe this would come fairly optimal as far as value goes.
