Speeding up elephant processing?
« on: August 14, 2010, 12:46:18 am »

So my dwarves have [SPEED:0], my Bone Carver is already at Legendary +5...WHY CAN'T HE CUT ELEPHANT BONES FASTER? Also, pretty much everything to do with elephants is bogged down to a slow trickle - any workshop with elephant bits instantly goes to top clutter level. ONE elephant tooth in the crafts workshop is enough to clutter the place. How can I speed this up?

I'd throw more dwarves at it.  Only one can do the butchering, tanning and leatherworking each, but as far as doing stuff with the bone and ivory, that's all cut up into multiple pieces.

What can't be solved by using more dorfs?

...fair point. I'll have to wait a bit for that, though, I'm only at the start of the second year with 14 dorfs. To be honest, I'm fairly surprised my original hunter's still alive - usually I lose him/her by the end of autumn on the first year.

Urist McOverseer: Ach lad, ye not be done with that tusk yet?
Urist McIvoryCarver: Have you seen this thing?  I have to get a small pyramid of chairs to reach the top of it!
Urist McOverseer: Okay, I'll give ye a few more days.  What of the bones, why do they not be bolts yet?
Urits McBonecarver: Honestly, I've yet to find a big enough knife...

If you accidentally lock the elves in the depot and wait until they're insane to capture them in cages and then lock the next group of elves in the depot and unleash the insane elves from their cages, that's still somehow your fault.

Elephants are huge and clutter up any workshop with their hugeness, slowing down work considerably pretty much regardless of skill.

Once you successfully butcher an elephant you'll have more meat than you know what to do with, though.

You could try to trow away a few bones. It might be a bit of a waste but if you can't do enough with the bones you might be better off without them.

Extreme value too, good trade material since you're sure to have massive excess.  Delicious elephant steaks sauteed in dwarven wine, with plump helmets and rock nuts, mmmm!

If at all possible, chop bits off of the elephant before it dies so that you only have to deal with one slightly smaller thing at a time. An added bonus is that you get one piece of leather per limb.

Trying to make a profit off of elephant bone carving is actually kind of silly.  Yeah, elephant bones are worth a lot on their own compared to other types, but they're also enormous, and the items you can craft from them aren't very valuable themselves.  I've always found it better to turn semi-precious and precious metal ores into mechanisms at first, then later get a steel manufacturing plant going to make large, serrated steel discs for mad lucre.  Seriously, even a no-quality one sells for over 7000 dorfbux.  Especially early on, you want to go for the most efficient profit-making methods possible, time- and value-wise.  The elephant herd doesn't cut it for that, and should remain for food only as far as I'm concerned.  (And how!  4500 prepared meals on hand and about half of it has elephant in it!)

Not so. Elephant bone mugs are quite lucruative.

I don't know how much time you actually spent doing that, but e.g. elephant bone crossbows are ~600 per trade, and I've had stacks of elephant meat sell for 1900+.  It's really a great trade item even if you can only get one or two a season.

I had a stack of elephant meat roast worth 22600 DB.
