why would you educate kids and sell them for $50?  at a full 10 years of education, you get $50.  but even with a local school, youve spent %15 a year and halved their labor to reach that education level.  thats an expense of $150, plus school construction, plus lost labor.  as far as i can tell, there is no reason to educate anyone in this game.

its not like there is a minimum education to operate a combine tractor.

Education gives you points. 10 points a year. I don't care about money, I'm making enough money per year to send all my kids to school for 100 years. I have eight elephants and six barns and four tractors. I'm talking about getting points.

But education can be useful, as long as you already have a good production base and are not in danger of starving to death. If you have a 5-year-old work all his life, say until he's 55, you'll get 50 years of work at 75% capacity. If you send a 5-year-old to school for 10 years, that basically makes them useless for 10 years. But then they will work for 40 years at 113% capacity. That's over a 50% increase in production, which means they're basically working for 60 years at 75% capacity. So it's an improvement. And when you're richer, and are pulling in a thousand or so a year, $150 is nothing. The cost of the school, I think $500 or so, is nothing (and you only pay it once). 10 extra years of work is a lot, that's maybe tens of thousands of dollars.

ah, i wasnt seeing where they were producing more on the farm.  there are lots of things in there that are non-intuitive.  it took me a couple plays to realize that, even though most of the crops are break-even propositions, the profit is generated through labor multipliers.  so selling children into slavery isnt a viable tactic at all.

in the end, i think i stopped planting crops because it took too long to click on them.  made all the money from barns.

How in the world do you buy a shovel?

And does Education do anything? (Besides being fucking expensive.)

Cheddarius has your answers about education, just a couple posts up.  all the tiles are color-coded for what kinds of items you can drop on them.  equipment like shovels and tractors go on one of the colored sets of tiles. i forget which.

To all of those protesting that educating kids and sending them off to jobs in the city is counter-productive: Now you know why so many people in the third world don't consider education to be important. Costs lots and really only benefits the individual, not the family.

I educated lots of kids and fired them off into city life. My farm contributed to the economic power of whatever country it was in, yessir!

There is definitely a very easy way to beat this game.

Like someone mentioned earlier, farm kids. Get a bunch of them. Max it out.

At the same time, completely forget about lifestock first. Lifestock takes a long time to pay off and initially, it totally isn't worth it. Instead, get some corn and some cotton. Don't worry about trying to strike it lucky with peanuts. After you max out children, you and your spouse will probably have terrible hp but you should be fine. Medicine is $1 per hp, so as long as you maintain them above 40 it's all gravy. Forget education for now, the children are your slaves. I never gave a crap about marriage etc. Irrelevant in the interests of profit maximization muhahaha!

Concentrate on a diversified crop. I usually go 1 row of corn, 1 row wheat, 2 rows cotton and 2 rows peanuts. If you can't afford that, try to maintain at least the corn and wheat. If you have at least two crops, you will generally always proper regardless of the random events. Get a well as soon as you can. You can also buy 4 scythes. Scythes are only slightly more expensive than shovels but provide much more bonus, so get a bunch of those. you'll be pulling in the big bucks soon enough.

I think past this point you're golden. Get roads and phones as soon as you can. I also think there's only one or two events that get rid of tractors and harvesters (which is odd, as you would think those would get stolen faster) so feel free to spam those too if you can afford them. Later on when you have wayyyy too much money, just plant 1/2 peanuts and 1/2 cotton and you will profit every time for sure.

If this game is trying to send a message, I am clearly not receiving it properly.

It's in one of the little buttons to the left.
It reduces the cost of sending a kid to school from $30 to $15. You also have to buy it to win the game.

Well I think I mastered the game sorta.

Last night I had a great game with some luck.

My farm was passed down to the great grand kid, and my original dude lived to a 100.

My live stock did so well that I never had to form again, and I was getting close to 20k every year from having 8 elephants.

When at turn 72, I retired with almost 400k.

I even had an angry mob steal everything from my land once because I wasnt planting any more.
