sand access in aquifer
« on: July 12, 2010, 07:56:22 pm »

I'm at this area that has a white sand aquifer layer. I'm ok with going through the aquifer by plugging it with a huge block of soil. But how do I access the sand? Is there a way from the layer above to somehow just remove the floor and see the layer underneath without breaching it? I would really like to continue my glass production after the sand I embarked with is done and gone.

I am pretty sure pumps will be involved but am unsure how to go about it.

Thanks.

Wait, I thought sand was inexhaustible...

Oh, you meant the 1 point bags you can buy? Uhm... check some of the tiles around or in your base. There's bound to be at least a few sand tiles if you have an aquifer in your map.

I got a whole layer of sand, except it's soaked with water. I haven't found any exposed spot elsewhere.

Wow that sucks...

I'd suggest magma, but I don't know if that turns the floor into obsidian or it stays sandy.

Oh I got an idea that might work.

If I leave a hole in the huge are I use to plug the aquifer will it be safe from flooding? I just pump it off and I'm good? Aquifer gets input water from the outside of the map?

# ###  ### # <- layer to be dumped  on the aquifer
#~~~~~~~~~~# <- channeled aquifer layer

Then
#          # <- open to the sky
#~#X#~~#X#~# <- plugged in aquifer with space for stairs (X) and hole for sand access

This works for me in similar situations. If you plug the aquifier the floor tile changes to whatever you collapse into it. If you then build a wall and deconstruct it, it seems to always revert to whatever it was before. Might work. I'd laugh if it made it into an aquifer and it starts spewing water. Who knows.

This is a platinum warhammer. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. it menaces with spikes of platinum.
there is an image of the goblin Utes Gozrusrozsnus and dwarves in elf bone. The goblin is making a plaintive gesture. the dwarves are striking a menacing pose.
this image relates to the slaying of Utes Gozrusroz

Dang a bunch of around 12 Macaques showed up and while fighting my miner/leader fell in the river and drowned. I'm almost done preparing for this plug in/expose middle.

I get it now, the hole is not important: the whole plug will become the same type as the aquifer layer. So it all was a non-issue to start with.
In fact it's somewhat inconsistent. I dropped a huge block of silt loam into a hole and it all magically turned into white sand.

Simplifies the whole issue. I'll revert and save my leader and do it right this time.

wait.. you use caveins to punch through aquifiers?

bah. REAL dwarves use pumps.

In this case it turned out to be a double aquifer... sighs. Pumps it will be!

I prefer cave-ins because they leave you with a bigger area to pass trough, allowing for more traffic.

At least my glass industry is back in business.

actually, pumps can open up as large an area as you want, it just takes longer.
