militia commander in .07/.08
« on: June 20, 2010, 07:20:04 am »

so you cant assign not anyone you like as militia commander/captain just a few... but how are those determined? its annoying you pick a random of the 7 starting dwarfs to start out as military, just to find out you cant use them :(

What? I know you can't use the expedition leader for the millitia commander position, but I've never encountered anything not letting me assign anyone else to the militia commander role. I usually made my carpenter/lumberjack into my commander, as he already has the axe and some skill with it.

My .06 game brought forward into .08 has a couple pages of valid dwarves for Militia commander. I don't know if there's any rhyme to exclusions (99.9% of the list is "no applicable skill") since I don't know if/how many exclusions I have given that there's 150 dwarves in my fort and I'm not about to audit that list.

maybe old saves dont reflect the change too... why dont just try to make quick new one to see on the 7 starters? :p

have a look at the personal traits or fitness levels of your eligible dwarves, look for links. Maybe theres something in there that determines it that's usually really common, and for some reason your dwarves are lacking it.

Hiya, I started 3 forts so far in 31.08, it allows me to pick any of my starting 7 dwarves or any of the 5-odd immigrants that have come in the first wave. For what it's worth, though, I always bring a military-skilled dwarf in my first 7 in DF31 because combat tends to happen quickly.

One thing that might be coming up is that if you have a dwarf that is currently leading another squad that has dwarves in it, you can't move them over without first assigning a replacement.  This makes it annoying to swap commanders, but a squad leader is required at this point for the squad to function.  I'm not sure if it should auto-promote the next dwarf down in the squad or just warn you at the end if you leave any leaderless squads with soldiers in them.  There are probably other situations, but that's the big one I can think of.

Why not both?  Warn us that we haven't assigned a replacement and auto promote the next one down if we don't assign?

ok this was my own stupidity after revisting the raws because of another bug of my drow mod i ust saw i had the gender:male set for the commander (which was not intended as i wanted female for that :x) which lead to the point the one i choose on embark for that job never shown up of course.

so it seems everything working here as intended even with gender tags ;)
