Adamantium sword and Fun?
« on: July 08, 2010, 09:21:25 am »

My current fortress has an Adamantium Sword somewhere underneath (in a cavern layer somewhere I asume).  It's only about 20 z-layers down, which is pretty close to the surface all things considered.  I've never seen an Adamantium Sword anywhere in 2010 yet.  Is this Fun that I should avoid?  Even if I don't go near the sword, am I still best off living in the top few layers?  I'd hate to break into Fun somewhere around 15-16 because of a multi-level cavern system.  So far I've managed to avoid Fun in 2010 because of still trying to figure out how to get a military working so that I don't get overrun by a goblin army after about three seasons.  I've read enough spoilers to know more or less what to expect, but not the details, and shouldn't it usually be much further down?

That upright sword will single-handedly provide most of your fortress wealth.
Said sword also seals the hole to very fun stuff.

Stay away from cavern 3 until you are ready to deal with hordes of undead. Even when you are, don't take the sword until you have a trap set to obsidianize the special-looking tile next to it.

EDIT: By "hordes of undead" I mean anywhere from 100 to (in my last fort) 350+. 200 of them were crundles but still...

Ah, the old "Adamantium Cork" routine.  Gotcha.  I figured it was related to HFS but I didn't know how exactly.

I'll try, if I can figure out what they were.  I've got a couple fortresses going at the same time, trying different styles and I'll have to find out which one it was and hope I still have the worldgen settings.  I only know it's even there with the "view Rooms" feature.  (Does that sound right?)  So I'm kind of assuming it reported the correct depth when I zoomed to it, since there's no way in hell (hah) I'm going to dig down and find out for sure.  (It wasn't 20 exactly, but it was somewhere in the 20-30 range.  A whole lot higher than I would have expected and relatively not that much further than I had already dug.)

Demonic fortresses are always in the third cavern layer. You just have a shallow map.

ok, back home, shuffled through my games and found it.  It's the world/site from this thread:

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=60021.0

The sword is on z-level 35.  I've abandoned and reclaimed the area a couple of times.  I have no idea if that has any effect whatsoever.  I'm sure that those worldgen params are tweaked in a way that would affect where the HFS appears now that I realize which world it's in.
