First experience with HFS (spoilers)
« on: June 11, 2010, 10:09:29 am »

I'll start off by saying I've been playing DF for nearly two years and this is the first time I've come across...this.  Wow.  Just...wow.  All I wanted was a little adamantine.  It was a typical vein going down into magma so I figured it couldn't possibly lead to anything bad, being so narrow.  Boy was I wrong.  I uncovered an eerie cavern and no sooner had I unpaused than hordes of...I don't even know what showed up and started pouring into my fort.

And they didn't waste any time destroying EVERYTHING!  I timed it.  Four minutes.  That's how long it took from the time I opened up the eerie cavern over 150 levels down to the time I got the game over message.  I didn't even have a military started yet so I knew I was pretty much screwed.  I tried walling off the area as soon as I found it but they were way too fast for that to ever work.

I suppose the only way to avoid this in the future is to either not dig so deep or check to see if adamantine veins are capped at the ends.  I managed to export images of the fort just before the attack started so I'll probably upload the map to the map archive later.

Whys it called HFS. Also my fort fell faster. First time I pierced it. I was actually massively in my infancy. I started on a glacier, and wanted to go 100% in the caverns I had a nice place set up. And stuck a nice rich adamantine vein immediately. I dug down, wealth going up like crazy, then bam. Lasted maybe a minute before everything was gone and dead.

This is a platinum warhammer. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. it menaces with spikes of platinum.
there is an image of the goblin Utes Gozrusrozsnus and dwarves in elf bone. The goblin is making a plaintive gesture. the dwarves are striking a menacing pose.
this image relates to the slaying of Utes Gozrusroz

HFS=hidden fun stuff. the game says "losing is fun!" on the instructions page.

I heard it called "happy fun stuff" before and that's what I think of every time I see it.  Has pretty much the same meaning.  The eerie cavern looks like it would be fun to explore but good luck ever getting down there.

Its the endgame challenge. Build a military powerful enough, line your dwarves up in formation, and then breach hell.

Defeat hell itself in glorious hand to hand combat.
