Well I'm baffled.  No response from that many keys is just weird.  Here's a thought: try downloading the new 31.05 version.

As far as I know there is no reason why that should fix your problems.  But I have a lot of computer problems magically go away by things that shouldn't matter.

And hey, new version!

just as an update for anyone else with this problem. I solved it
thanks for the advice UmbrageOfSnow :), I was already using the new version though.
it turns out that DF gets very annoyed if you try to alter the interface file in the init folder. I had to go into the game and change the keybindings from there.
now it seems to be working fine
