Quick Question Regarding Bottomless Pits
« on: December 14, 2009, 08:47:45 am »

Reading Vanguard Warden's thread just now, a question popped into my head:

Can you make your own bottomless pits by channeling squares in the very bottom Z-level of an area?

I didn't notice a conclusive answer either on the wiki or by a quick search here on the forums. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen it asked before...

Anyone know? Please and thanks. :)

From recent experience, I know that one cannot build downward stairs at the bottom level. So one would presume that channeling wouldn't work either.

You can't make them by digging, but I'm sure that there's a utility (tweak? I think) to change selected tiles to be 'bottomless pit' tiles.  You won't get the pit creatures though.  And playing with those kinds of tools is a quick path to the dark side.

Was afraid of that. :( Usually I have such difficulty finding a site I like, that I'll take the best I can get without a chasm/pit. But it would still be nice to have one for easy disposal of nobles kittens elves refuse.

Thanks for the replies. :)

You say that as if it's a bad thing. If spawning 12-tile wide balls of magma in midair and dropping them on friends and enemies alike is "dark", then bring on the cave adaptation.

I think my best utility-related disaster was when I accidentally created several permanently freezing tiles in the middle of my main hallway, and the whole fortress started dying as dwarves walked into them, froze to death instantly, and then more dwarves came to pick up the corpses.

(Also: Disco-fortress. Just set all the tiles in the world to have an invalid matgloss ID, sit back, and prepare to be amazed.)

Is it wrong to say that I want that?
Because it's awesome. Full of awesome and magma.

No. You can't dig further than the bottom Z-level.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

There was once a "feature" where if you collapsed a level of stone onto an empty lowest level, it would punch through the same as it would for any unsupported floor. A: I am not sure if it still works . B: I am not sure if items dropped into that void disappear or are held in some weird limbo (still consuming resources to slow the simulation).

If you want to nuke any and all items, use a garbage compactor. It's more efficient (can be located anywhere you need it) and in no version does it result in vengeful uprisings from the deep.
