Why each time I come on Bay 12, my fortresses seems smaller and smaller to me?

This :D

Talk about unique... I've never seen anything in DF carpeted before!  Now you need to catch some elves, release them in there, and stain it red with their blood (but only on the red parts)!

I'm assuming this was laid out through stockpile use? Very cool, btw.

I bet he installed the ropes.  It would be too hard to control how they ended up otherwise.

Indeed, I (b)uilt the ropes. Not only is this much easier to control than stockpiles, it also adds the carpet's value to the throne room.
As for being original, I do have to admit that I am not the first to use carpets.
There is a giant bridge fort out here on the forums somewhere that has an awesome double-helix walkway carpet, which inspired me to try my hand at carpet making as well.

I'm pretty Copperblazes had a rope-carpet as well.

Mountainbanners (top of the favourites on the map archive, too lazy to go get the link) had a crazy DNA-strand-looking one; it's the most impressive one I've ever seen for sure.

That was done with ropes? I thought it was just floor tiles.

wow thats nice :O. how long did it take to complete that? I also noticed your nice round rooms. can you give me tips of how to do round rooms  :D
i have always wanted to do round rooms and i sketched one on paper but i had squares and not rectangles like they are in DF
It helps to use a square tileset, like the one that comes with DF but isn't the default (curses_16x16.png or something like that).

The thing is, it only looks rectangular  the way you have it now.  But that is merely a misrepresentation of what is actually a series of squares to the game.  It takes just as long for a dwarf to walk one tile north as it does to walk one tile east.
