Is there a chance that the "Magma Pool" I searched for in the embark screen is the paltry 21 Urists of magma in the HFS chamber?

No, a Magma Pool is a large circular feature somewhere between ~20 - 40 units in diameter and anywhere from ~1 - 5 z levels deep, full of magma.



Very occasionally however, these pools are empty. the same thing happens to UG Pools, UG Rivers and Magma Pipes, of course when it happens to Rivers they fill up again in a few seconds, and when it happens to Pipes they fill up again in a few minutes, but all the underground features can, rarely, appear completely empty, and if it's a magma or UG pool they'll often be full to the brim with cave spider webs when you get there, and with dirt on the floor if you want to farm.

It's not known why this sometimes occurs.

That's odd, because that's what I expected, but I've done a 15x15 exploratory mining pattern every 3-6 levels so far and I can't find the damn pool. To be fair, those explorations aren't done yet and I got derailed by finding the titular Funhouse. Ah, well.

Perhaps next time I play that fort I'll have better luck. Ah, well.

You're working too hard finding the magma pool.

Divide up the map into blocks 48x48 tiles large. Sink a shaft down the center of each of these 48x48 blocks.

You will find the magma pool. It might be ugly and disruptive having all these shafts all around your map, however, so I recommend save scumming once you find it.

See, I can't do that because I play Ironman style and I want to convert these blocks into rooms later.

So it may be inefficient, but it's inefficient by choice. The Dwarven way.

Your call; but the Magma Pipe\Pool is always in the center of each region block (or possibly slightly off to the side), a shaft sunk in the middle of a region block is guaranteed to find one if it's there.


Additionally, if you altered your embark square after using finder but before embarking, you may ahve accidentally chopped the magma pool off; this is why i play with all features revealed.

I did no such thing. I searched a 4x4 spot from the start so I could have decent FPS and all the features I wanted.

You absolutely sure that the finder said there was a magma pool?


(Also; i suggest playing with features revealed. Or at the very least magma features revealed; not having them when you want them is infuriating, and usually the site finder doesn't actually get you the best combination.)

The finder occasionally glitches up, though. For example, sometimes it'll give you aquifers even if you specified no aquifers. (Experienced that personally yesterday.)

I get the aquifer bug all the time. Happens when a biome borders a biome with an aquifer, sometimes in the overlap you get a few aquifer tiles. Of course, occasionally the entire biome is aquific, so meh.

I'd recommend playing with a magma pipe next time. They're way more fun, you get... magma and... well, you get all the magma you could want to play with.

I couldn't find a Magma Pipe with all the traits I wanted so I settled for a magma pool.

Though apparently I settled for no such thing.

Something similar happened to me too recently. I found a spot with an underground pool (I was attempting to make an underground Minas Tirith, with a Tower cap garden to represent the white tree) but upon embark the pool was not present as advertised. Resulted in my giving up the project.

It definitely wasn't a case of dry pool, because there wasn't even an empty muddy cavity anywhere in the mountain, nor were there stranded pool creatures.

Maybe it's already a known glitch that sometimes underground features failed to show up, period?
