So it was my first fort with magma and I had begun an enormous exploratory mining project with pop around 30 to find my magma and get my Almost-Free Steel Industry rolling. I found some warm stone - 3 tiles forming a corner. Assuming I had found my magma vent (evidently near the bottom), I tunneled a little to the side, made a staircase upward, dug towards it (attempting to create an outline of the vent), and promptly broke into the glowing pits before I even KNEW if I had adamintine or not. A brief investigation showed no further magma but TONS of charcoal and ashes. I immediately ordered the corridor in walled away.

Several minutes laters, a single demon that had slipped through finally decided to jump one of my founders, a multilegendary with no actual combat skills, and killed him. I assumed I was about to get my whole fort fried when I realized it was a tentacle demon and a miner had just killed it with a lucky axe shot.

I found this highly confusing.

A tentative expedition Crossbowdorf-backed expedition to channel in from above the top floor and a sacrifice of a stray muskox offspring (the hell do I need muskoxen for?) revealed that yes, indeed, the HFS pits were full of tentacle demons and not, as the charcoal and ash indicated, Spirits of Fire. I am confused. But then, this is my first HFS pit so I'm not really sure what's going on at all.

Evidently there was some confusion in the Infernal Affairs department - I have magma/charcoal/ashes in my funhouse, but the clowns have corrupt intentions instead of delightful glows. Is this normal? How should I go about extracting worldgen and embark information so I can see if this replicates itself?

Also, may post this world to the cookbook; it has magma, flux, iron and gems galore, shittons of bauxite and bituminous coal, an underground river, no aquifer, trees, a chasm, confused HFS, and all civs in contact.

It's possible some of your raws might have been corrupted. Have you done any modding to your copy of the game?

I broke into my first funhouse recently (also by accident - thankfully didn't lose anyone important) and also had that happen to me - I had three rooms, one type for each of the clowns, but they were froggies.

The bottom level of the pits always has magma, charcoal, and ash, because that's where the demon that likes fire and death and torture lives. The top two levels are specific to whatever type of demons come out.

Is the charcoal and ash and magma only on the bottom level, or is it across all the levels?

It's possible some of your raws might have been corrupted. Have you done any modding to your copy of the game?

Haven't touched them.

As far as I know it's only frog clowns and fireclowns that can't be drowned.

Hmm.

On one hand, I want to give my crossbowdorfs and the Spear Corps a shitton of titles for graduating Clown College. On the other hand, the thought of drowning 4 levels of clowns is hilarious to me.

Footkerchief: I'm pretty sure what happened is it snuck out before your walls went up and started prowling around without jumping anyone until they were alone. Unless you pre-walled it and lost a miner-sacrifice, in which case I have no idea.

11 Crossbowdorfs and 10 Speardorfs, all Champions, and 4 support Champion Wrestlers with freshly obtained hammers, fought versus 40 corruption clowns.

The clowns never stood a chance. They, er, never actually got to the melee champions. They got dropped by my crossbowdorfs and the Pull Lever/R + 6 tiles in a row of 2 iron spikes each (that I used, coincidentally, to train up a weaponsmith so I can make my Funstuffium into better killing devices).

Of course, that probably means the whole reason I thought it would be particularly fun to open up the pits (giving titles to all my military dorfs) was a failure, but oh well.

I have triumphed in my first HFS scenario!

Yeah; corrupt and amphibian clowns aren't all that dangerous (they're dangerous, but not that bad.)

It's the Spirits of Fun you gotta watch out for; thems are fortress killers.

Yeah. I would imagine the part where they can kill stuff by being too close would have that effect.

Is there a chance that the "Magma Pool" I searched for in the embark screen is the paltry 21 Urists of magma in the HFS chamber?
