Animation in DF
« on: April 19, 2009, 01:05:29 pm »

Hello.
I still hope to see DF with simple graphics animation based on tiles and sprites. I like classic RPG games:
Chrono Trigger[snes](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ru/d/d5/ChronoTriggerInside.PNG, http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ru/b/ba/ChronoTriggerDS.PNG,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrono_Trigger and video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4MAJ59sZHA),
Seiken Densetsu 3[snes](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOgyHHB2Vco)
or Firelight[zx] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ_7209iiu4)
))
Questions:
1) Is it possible to make in current version tile sets larger than 16[16 pixels... my father hasn't sharp eyes and can't see anything with this tiny tilesets?
2) I want to participate in graphic development.

Where i can read about graphic development in DF?

I know you can make the tilesets bigger than 16x16, there are a few in the wiki.
Just one example (20×32).

Most people make the graphics sets for 16x16 though so you see lots of tile sets for the same size.

Tile / Character sets are currently used for all buildings, tiles, water, furniture etc while Graphic sets can be used for all creatures. So if you want your own graphics for barrels you have to replace the '%' with a little barrel but this means if a '%' comes up in text you get the barrel instead. This applies to anything that uses the Character set unfortunately and with many characters being used both in names and as levers or other furniture you tend to get a lot of overlap.

Information on tile sets in general

List of user made tile sets

List of user made graphics sets

You might also want to check out the DF Modding board as that's where people tend to post their graphic / tile sets for critique.

On a somewhat related note, when tile graphics are updated, I'd like to see everything able to use more than one tile in sequence.  That is, allow you to use 2 tiles (red, yellow) for firesnakes and other flaming guys...

Wouldn't [GLOWTILE:] or whatever work for that? it would only be for 2 colors. but still useful.

YEAH 16 bit era graphics!

SECRET OF MANA 2! (I played an emulator of it, fun game, first was my favorite game of all time though)

This would be a pretty cool idea, even if simple (dwarf mining is just a dwarf swinging a pick repeatedly)

Out of question, what happens if you just put an animated .gif in for graphics? Will you be able to have dwarves eternally dance? Or will it just glitch out?

Seeing how the only format on that wiki is PNG, I'd guess that's the only supported image format for tilesets.

Actually, before dX you had to convert them from .png to .bmp, after you downloaded them.

I've heard that you can now feed PNGs directly into DF, but I've never actually tried it, as I went pure ASCII, just before dX came out.
