Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

This whole thread is full of quote boxes... oh damn, I did it again.

"Having faith" that the bridge will not fall, implies that the bridge itself isn't that trustworthy. It's not that different from "I pray that the bridge will hold my weight."

Now, the way I look at it, someone asks the question, "Why are we here?" and a scientist begins to study the possibilities...

I'm curious. Can you tell me what a scientist's answer to "Why are we here?" is, or how the scientist would go about beginning to study that question?

I am so glad you guys are using my offensive descriptions of atheists and theists for the forces of good instead of evil  ::) I should have seen that coming. For the record, I wasn't intending to point fingers and call you guys those things, that's just clearly how you see each other and you're doing a very poor job of hiding it, despite your "This was not intended to be offensive!" disclaimers on both sides.

Why won't I just obey my better judgment and stop clicking on this topic...

I don't think Andir is a scientist so any answer he gives would be pure speculation. You might want to ask a scientist that question.

This is kind of an off-topic thread now, and it seems the OP has abandoned it.  It looks like it'll just become more degenerate over time, and people are not behaving well in general, so I've locked it.
