Getting through that aquifer
« on: May 07, 2009, 02:45:14 pm »

Hey guys. I've been looking up on the wiki on how to get past that aquifer but I;ve been having problems. I'm trying the pump method. Water wheels apperiently do not work anymore. So when I try to to use dwarf power the water goes EVERYWHERE and then my dwarves cancel the pump job before I can even build one wall.

Any tips?

Can you show us your current pump design?

I assume you don't have any magma or are on a map that freezes over winter. Because then it would be easy: Dig, wait/pour magma on it, dig deeper.

But yeah, pump. Have you tried using windmills?

You could try the cave-in method. It's surprisingly easy to engineer.

Cave-ins work. Pumping the water back into the aquifer works too, to prevent the water from going everywhere. Water wheels will work, you just need a bit of flow: Try putting them in front of the pump outflow, for example.

here's your solution: magma pipe. it works

I think it'd be better to just throw him in a pit.
By pit I mean "ledge designated as pit some 30 levels above the ground water magma" and that would,as they say be the end of that.

Accept that if no one else is having problems, but you are, then it's probably... you?

The power transfer is not hard, but nor is it intuitive.  Easy to get it wrong and not realize it.

As asked above, show us your design - exactly.

Windmills work just fine for pumps. You'll just need a lot of wood.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

They do not, however, work when the 'native tile' of the region is the Aquifer tile.

That was a nasty surprise.

Are there any elevated areas which you could use to try and dig in a bit above it?
