Mysterious laziness
« on: February 16, 2009, 07:09:51 pm »

A number of my dwarves have been dying of thirst recently, 4 as of now. None of the other dwarves have drunk recently, either. I have barrels of ale, wine, and the like in my food stockpile, there're two zones on a nearby brook with the water source enabled, and a well which reads full. As a side note, my carpenter refuses to do anything even though only his carpentry is enabled and there's wood in the wood stockpile, and tasks to be done at the workshop, and my mason has the same story. Some of the dwarves complain of the lack of a well even though it is also enabled, and a lot of them complain of thirst.

Anyone know what could be causing this?

Sounds like something is blocking their paths.  If you draft one and tell them to go directly to the booze, do they go there?

Yeah, I can station any of them at the booze, the carpenter's shop, the water, and the mason's shop, and they get there no problem.

Edit: No one has died of thirst recently, and they seem to be drinking again without me having  changed anything, but the mysterious laziness is still rampant.

I had a problem with people seemingly stuck myself.
It turned out that I had improperly mined out my entrance:

I had a ramp entrance:
Code: [Select]
OVERHEAD VIEW

Surface Level:
O==============O
++++++++++++++V=
++++++++++++++V=
++++++++++++++V=
O==============O

Fortress Level 1:
O==============O
++++++++++++++^=
++++++++++++++^=
++++++++++++++^=
O==============O

O Pillar (Wall)
= Wall
+ Floor
V Downward Ramp
^ Upward Ramp

That I then mined out to:

Code: [Select]
OVERHEAD VIEW

Fortress Level 1:

O=================O
++++++++++++++^+++=
++++++++++++++^+++=
++++++++++++++^+++=
O=================O

Because I had done this, those ramps (which are to be though of as a slope) did not connect to any natural or constructed wall on their same Z-level that were walkable on the Z-level above it. And as such, the people inside the fort were trapped until I realized what I had done. (This was when it was first constructed, so the miners were stuck inside without the booze or food from the wagons.)

This probably is not your problem, but hey, just in case.

To recap:

Code: [Select]

This works.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This does not work.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This does not work.

W Wall

The thing that confuses me about dorfs is this. Dorf 1 dies in an avalance or somesuch. Dorf 2 is friends with dorf 3 and dorf 1. Dorf 2 berserks because of his friends death and kills dorf 3. also a friend. W. T. F.
Clearly you've never been drunk.

That's good to know since I have had ramps just like that in the past, but everything in my current fortress is on the same level.

I came back to say that my count and consort both just died of thirst, in my dining room. The dining room has over 300 drinks in it.

Something is up I think...
