Whoops...

...

The one word from a booming voice in the sky that makes all dwarfs wet themselves.

The components for a screw pump are
-pipe (can be made out of anything, unless the construction is submerged into magma, then it needs to be made out of magma safe materials)
-block (same as above)
-corkscrew (always needs to be made out of magma safe materials)

From what I have heard, the corkscrew does not need to be made out of magma safe materials (unless, again, it is to be submerged). People have used wooden pumps for magma.

Really, the only thing you need bauxite for is mechanisms. Everything else can be made of iron, and some can be made of wood if you're clever.

Nickel is also magma-safe, and has a bonus of being damn-near-worthless otherwise.

So is nickel silver, with the additional bonus of requiring less nickel (think of it this way - for every nickel magma-safe item, you get to make a free magma-safe items out of zinc or copper)

Yes, but zinc and copper are useful for other things, making it sort of a waste to use them, whereas nickel can only be used on its own (low value), or for nickel silver, which, even though it incorporates copper and zinc, is still only value 3.

Right, but if you're short on magma-safe materials or want to make lots of magma gear, and have plenty of copper/zinc, it's a way to stretch it. And kill two birds with one stone if you've got a noble demanding production of nickel silver objects and don't feel like killing them.

It's something worth mentioning.

Just to be exhaustive: platinum and adamantine are also magma-safe, and raw adamantine is a magma-safe stone. (native platinum is not a magma-safe stone, oddly).

Hmm... so could I make raw adamantine bowers for their left walls?
