Are you sure? I thought having a name made them legendary, and I just stabbed a named cougar to death in fortress mode with my spear squad.

Animals are automatically named when they get a kill. (Of something that already has a name, like a sentient creature?) I don't know about them gaining experience or getting legendary stats.
