Creating Legendary animals
« on: November 05, 2008, 03:24:15 am »

As I understand it animals gain experience upon fighting, and can become legendary through that experience. Now, what would be the best way to go about training these animals? Any recommendations? I've considered feeding injured or unconscious dwarves to wild animals that are naturally predatory but what about animals like elephants?
(Possibly related question: Is there any backlash to killing the merchants and liaison from the dwarves?)

Drop the wounded dwarf into a 1x2 pit with said elephant and it will panic and lash out at the dwarf as it won't be able to flee.

Hmm the only problem I see at the end of this road is that after killing a dwarf they will still kill my dwarves even if tamed. I might have to feed them wounded goblins instead.

I have tame raccoons. What do I do with them?

For raccoons I would say easy, renewable food source. But if you want them to become guard raccoons You'll have to pit them against something. Preferably something already nearly dead or unconscious. Cage, wound, then recage some goblins, then toss them in a 2x1 pit, like the elephant recommendation. The raccoon will fight, get better, then eventually. You will have a fighting raccoon. Then when it comes time, release your doom raccoons upon unsuspecting sieges.

I wonder if animals have the same capacity for improvement as dwarves?

I do not think animals can gain skills, as they do not have the [CAN_LEARN] tag, or any tag that implies it (like [INTELLIGENT]).

However, if you mod in the tag for the creature, it might work.

Might I suggest giving them this tag, changing swims_innate to swims_learned, and giving it some swimming training? That should make some relatively cheap attributes for these creatures. Plus, you can mass train them this way.

If animals could really learn, wouldn't it be faster/easier to just put ten animals (like war dogs) in a small pit and then drop unwounded goblins? They wouldnt stand a chance.

I tried my hand at modding, couldnt find a raccoon creature so made one myself, made it trainable, and launched the game. now I have war raccoons  :P

They look exactly like normal raccoons but the description is different. Also, it seems that you can take down one heavly armoured goblin with 10-12 war raccoons, so I made them breed fast.

Seems legendary animals only make an appearance in adventure mode. Sadly.
