A horse walks into a bar. The barman says, "Why the long face?" The horse says "Because this cruelty we exhibit is one of the single defining traits we have.  It reminds us we are human.  Embrace it.  Burn them all.  Dwarf, Goblin, Cat, Dragonfly, Carp, let none escape."

Steam is different from the boiling clouds of whatever you get now days. Boiling liquids can and do cause death and fire. For instance, fire imp fat boils when you  butcher the fire imp. This means that your dwarves can be killed by dead fire imps.

The two I killed and butchered didn't do anything to my dwarves, and I haven't disabled any options like temperature.

Only if you decided to mod them to be butcherable...

They aren't by default?

I wonder which of my mods has enabled that then...

It is just a game. If later versions include prisoner negotiations, then perhaps sparing them would be fair then.
Pfft, I'd still slaughter them.
Thankfully, there is no end to my cruelty on DF.

[BUTCHERABLE_NONSTANDARD] is gone now. The only non butcherable stuff now is sentients.

From "Angroshs Kinder" Das schwarze Auge Zwergenhandbuch - (Angrosh Children, the dark eye, german pen&paper, dwarven handbook):
"Elves!? Their men dont wear beards, and their women bathe nacked to lure you into the water and drown you. Thank Angrosh they are as ugly as the day and all big and skinny."

I did notice that they produce a puff of red vapor when butchered, though.

Fortunately it seems to have been harmless.

Booze Bombs will explode if they have magma poured on them right?
You could have a small room with a booze bomb sitting over a grate, and a hatch above it that drops down a small amount of magma, which blows up the bomb, and flows down through the grate beneath it, ready for recycling!

The prisoners will at least die happy...I bet they'd like the magmafall...but I doubt they'd have very much time to admire it.

Booze barrels don't really do anything other than burst and evaporate though.

Their only real ability to damage comes from the heat of the burning barrels. The smoke and vapors are all just eye candy.

Steam is different from the boiling clouds of whatever you get now days. Boiling liquids can and do cause death and fire. For instance, fire imp fat boils when you  butcher the fire imp. This means that your dwarves can be killed by dead fire imps.

This only occurs if the fire imp was just recently submersed in magma.  Their body temperature slowly changes to reflect their environment.  If you want to safely fight and/or butcher fire imps (without starting wildfires or scalding dwarves with boiling fat), try to lure them out of the magma and let them cool for a week or two before giving it a go.
