I frequently have sites without iron, though if you embarked on a site with metals, other materials should be available. I have a huge fortress without a single trace of iron, but incredibly rich in gold. Solution is simple: make crafts, make goods, dig for other metals, then sell and trade them in for quality weaponry or other things. Weaponry is more or less the only thing I do need purely iron for.
