Cage traps? And another question...
« on: September 11, 2008, 07:18:55 pm »

Quick question:
I'm trying to build cage traps, I have several cages just laying about but if I go to my Mechanic's Workshop I can only make rockfall traps still. What am I doing wrong?
---
Also: I have a squad of three dwarves (one is the leader of said squad) and a fairly large barracks (though part of it is filled with stock piles) but when they are off duty, they don't seem to spar. I don't have any other squads. What do I need to do here as well?

Traps aren't constructed at your mechanic's workshop. Mechanisms, which are used in all traps, are what is built there. If you look under the build menu, under traps, you'll see cage traps as an option. You build them just like you would a stone-fall trap.

Ah, alright then.
How come my Mechanic's Shop will only allow me to build stone traps, then, and not levers or anything of that sort?

Your mechanic's shop constructs mechanisms.

Mechanisms are generic. A single mechanism could be used in a stone fall trap, or a cage trap, or a lever, or to build a millstone, or to build a gear assembly, etc. etc. There's only one kind, but it's used for everything.

Oh! Alright then, thanks. I thought the words "rock mechanisms" meant a rock fall trap.  ::)

Make sure they are "standing down" (Military, view squad, on duty -> standing down.)

Make sure that they don't have nervous system injuries (upper/lower spine, neck, or brain).  Those will permanently prevent them from sparring.

Also, keep in mind that they won't always be sparring, even if they're off-duty and uninjured.  They tend to wander around soldiering even when they aren't eating, drinking, or sleeping.

And finally, you must have two who are wanting to spar at the same time. Since you only have three dwarves in your military, it might happen less often than if you had many dwarves (a few of whom would always be wanting to spar, probably).

Just a thought...
