They give the same defense. Also, sometimes your civ doesn't have every piece of equipment, but I think right now it only applies to high boots because there's no alternative to the other armors.

There are alternatives in clothes.  Togas are not always availible, I know.

Actually, high boots don't cover as much of the body as a low boot does.  So, technically, less defense.

How does that work? I have always imagined high boots to be the equivalent of metal knee-high boots and low boots to be metal sneakers.

High boots have [UPSTEP:1] Which i assume means they also protect the lower leg. I can't think of any other pieces of armor with this tag though.

That makes no sense. Unless you mean its the same amount of material spread over a larger surface so it's thinner. Which is wrong because high boots actually have a greater material size than low boots. I.e. it IS more material.

No, it means I had a brain fart and reversed what I was talking about.  Switch "high" and "low" and you get what I meant to say.

I asked this question a looong time ago, and Toady said it had something to do with temperature, so if they lived in a cold area they had access to warmer clothes like mittens and high boots.

I don't know if this is still true for the 3d version.

I had a similar problem recently: though I could make leather high boots just fine from the workshop's menu, they were nowhere to be found on the job manager screen. I didn't try them with metal.
