Migrant diversity
« on: September 04, 2020, 07:07:09 am »

In my fortress, the last 3 migration waves came with many dwarves having as only labour skills Animal Caretaker and/or Herbalist.

Are there some in-game reasons for this strong bias (like many plant gathering jobs needing to be done) or is this just a plain bug ?

Edit: I just checked the last of the 3 waves: There are combat, arts, social or scholar skills, and outside Animal Cartaker and Herbalist, the only labour skill is a Butcher.

Don't quote me on that.
Cacame channels aquifers into submission by staring at them. Cacame is so badass, kobolds give him their children to leave them alone. If Hidden Fun Stuff digs too far down, they hit Cacame. Cacame once took a Tantrum Spiral and impaled four enemies on it.

DF tries to take historical figures of your civ and send them to your fortress, so different civs might send different migrants. Thus, it's sort of an effect of how your civ happened to develop.

It can also be noted that migrant skills doesn't matter much, as skills can be gained while performing the job, with unskilled just taking a bit longer.

You could also assign jobs based on what preferences and physical traits migrants have.

That "useless" cheese maker who cant do anything, but happens to like green glass, might soon find there's a job opening at the nearest glass forge.

Or the "good for nothing" fish cleaner that's incredible strong, would probably be conducting their first training sessions in the main military squads, shortly after picking up a full set of plate mail, shield and a war hammer.

in my latest fort i have been getting a lot of migrant legendary musicians. i think i have 12 of them right now out of 48 dwarves. just fine for my tavern, but it seems a little unusual

Are the fortresses there for psychological reasons?  Are they trying to hold back entropy itself, rather than the goblin hordes?
