Question on Sieges
« on: November 02, 2018, 08:57:51 am »

Hello! New to the forum, though I've been playing the game on and off for about a year now.

Ever since I've started playing DF, though, I've never got a siege. In the 8+ forts I've ran (I like to spend a few weeks to a month on a single fort, and most last about 4-5 years, so I don't do many) not a single has had a siege. I've tried creating worlds where goblins rule and dwarves are almost extinct (My current one is on one of these worlds where the dwarves spread too thin and the elves and gobos killed almost all of them), I've settled right next to dark pits and dark fortresses, I've attacked them and raided and razed, I've produced thousands of bins of crafts. But nothing seems to work, and I'm always dead of FPS death before even a hint of a siege by year 5. It's the main reason it has been so hard for me to really enjoy my forts now.

And, on top of that I've never had a forgotten beast attack nor a beast attack in general. In my FIRST fort I had a werehog attack my fort, but ever since then I've never had any sort of event besides migrants and trading.

I use LNP, by the way.
Is there something I'm doing wrong, or any way I can force these attacks or sieges? It gets very frustrating when I spend years building moats, walls, fortifications, traps, spike pits, and training soldiers just for them to go unused (Besides the occasional dwarf falling into one of the said traps or spike pits). It's gotten to the point where I usually just release the clowns by year 5 instead of just leaving the fort in order to watch something happen.

Any way I can fix this? Or do I just have to wait for the RNG gods to bless me?

Hello friend, welcome to the community.

A few questions: What is your population size? From what I gather I believe you have to be over at least 50 (have a mayor) in order to trigger a siege and at least over 80 for a megabeast/titan. Also there is a certain amount of wealth you have to create that also affects these.

But from what I gather I assume both of these are ticked and you still aren't getting any. If that's the case, I think the best option is to just keep waiting I guess. My current fort is in it's 8th year and we've got 55 pop but no sieges as of yet.

I usually hardcap pop at 100, so most of my forts have 80-100 by the time I end it. And the problem with waiting is, as I said my forts almost always die by year 5 due to FPS death. And what amount of wealth is the trigger? I usually put stone crafts on repeat and get multiple masterworks, and I do the same with stone furniture. Any tips for how to increase wealth besides that?

If you’re really having trouble getting a siege try the following:

Check your neighbors tab before picking the start location, make sure you have some groups at war.

Create a world where a necromancer tower exists (big purple I), and a build fort next to it.

Be hostile to traders

Keep sending raids like you do now

Make sure that your fort isn’t in a location surrounded by other impassable features, like a large body of water or mountains

Ramp up more population, and more wealth. Try making things out of precious material.

Help your dwarves build artifacts as best as possible, you can offset this with adventurer too I believe by stealing them and sending to location but I haven’t confirmed

If you are using adventure mode, try peeking around certain areas where there is high * traffic, plop a fort there

(If you’re willing to change map, try making more civs, less FBs, and more # of secrets, and use region with less islands for map)

Hi, the raws in vanilla dwarf fortress for goblins, humans and elves are set up to not allow sieges before population 80. The wealth triggers are disabled. You also need to either embark with goblins as neighbours or provoke someone by raiding them.

If someone declares war due to being raided the population 80 requirement is removed.

Zombies don't have any requirements and with a tower as a neighbour you might potentially get a siege in year 1.

Of course having high populations in your neighbours sites helps.

Triggers can all be altered as you like of course. Wiki gives the values you need.

Before raiding, advice was to embark so that your closest goblin site is a dark fortress that has no other targets to siege.

I also second necro towers; I settled in range of 80 and not a season goes by without siege. Sometimes multiple sieges - but that's not as great as they fight each other so your dwarves have less to kill.

Siege mechanics were updated a little in 44.x so that sieges don't have to come from the nearest site but a few candidates are looked at (mentioned in an fotf someplace). Still it remains good advice to encourage sieges if you're not into raiding as they're less likely to be busy sieging other places.

Yes, sieges are launched from a randomly selected eligible site within range, with no weighting towards high population ones, so one siege may be full strength, while the next one consists of 10 recruits because that siege was launched from a crummy low pop pit.

I don't know how provoked sieges from out of range are handled, though.

I made an extremely expensive fort and didn't get a siege until the 5th year.  So, one thing you're up against, your forts might have to last just a little longer.  Just making trade goods doesn't cause sieges, you have to actually trade them.  The more you trade to the merchants the more the word will spread.  I don't see anyone mentioning this but with recent patches trading becomes very important to getting a siege.  The more the trading the bigger the possible siege.  Like someone else mentioned, having an expensive fort helps too.  Also, if you don't see goblins on the list of civs you have contact with at the start, you are not ever going to be raided.  Good luck!

Not to be that guy, but you did check your init files to make sure invaders were allowed, yes?

You can provoke wars more by raiding, so you don't need neighbors any more to get sieges.

Any confirmation on More Wealth=Bigger Siege? Makes sense, but I don't think there's enough Science to prove it, is there? Or just a comment from Toady?
