surface caverns/ strange events
« on: November 23, 2017, 02:50:39 pm »

so I stated a new world for the update and started a new fortress to figure out the new mechanics. in a random hill that goes up 3 z levels there is the first layer of the caverns (its accessible without digging and it doesn't go deeper)

this happen to anyone else

so an interesting update. Apparently there is a hydra chilling out in the open (on the surface, in a forest) and there was an announcement I missed saying I discovered a cave and a lair. so current theory is that somehow part of the surface is a cave (when I started digging there was sand left behind from digging stone walls, like a cavern) and the hydra's lair is in the surface cave.

so far the hydra has just been chilling, I hope it stays chilling because it will rip my 7 dwarves apart.

edit 2: turns out I was right, the hydra killed a jaguar and came back to it's original spot. surface cave, no clue how this happened.

edit 3: turns out the passage actually did lead to the caverns, I know this because an elk bird got killed by the hydra

Sounds more like a cave to me. They're a natural part of the game and happen all the time. You just didn't have the world set to show them off the bat.

that sounds right, but it's calling all the ground inside of it cavern floor which is throwing me off.

Even dwarf-dug floors have that label, I think. It's a bit of a weird name, but it just means "unsmoothed, underground floor/ground."

guess I never noticed that, even though I've been playing for two years now.

Meh, there's stuff I've probably never noticed despite playing on and off for the last four or five years myself.

You never really notice the floor, but do you know what eludes your notice even more?!

The ceiling. Nobody has ever seen a ceiling. You have only seen the tops of them, that is, floors. But you have never seen a floor from below. Who knows what might lurk above your dwarves' heads? You can't know. Nobody dares look.

Yeah, this happens. Megabeasts (and semi-megabeasts) will find lairs, which are often (always?) caves. These are not always hostile (as in, pathfind to nearest dwarf) but will probably attack if approached, so handle with caution. And caves sometimes (but not always) intersect the first layer of the caverns.

Boy this game has some depth, if you pardon the pun.

"Current Resident"s can't be tamed and are trapavoid, to make them harder to deal with.
