rc tilesets (legible pure ASCII)
« on: August 23, 2018, 03:16:43 am »

Collection of DF default tileset derivatives with main goal to provide better legibility while retaining original feel.

Link: https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=16864

Includes:
[tilesets]
* curses_640x300.png -- backup of the base DF tileset
* rc16x24.png -- upscaled and brushed version of the above
* rc11x18.png, rc15x18.png -- redone from scratch in a new ratio, bulky vs smooth
* rc11.png, rc15.png -- above, squashed into square tiles
* rc7.png, rc13.png, rc17.png -- few more attempts for different resolutions
[txt]
* colors.txt, base_colors.json -- colorscheme configs for DF and CDDA
* png2ttf.py, png2ttf.sh -- font generator, accepts DF png tilesets and returns fonts; based on png_font_to_ttf and repurposed for my particular needs
[fonts]
* *.otf -- few pregenerated fonts by the script above

Installation notes:
DF: pngs go to data/art, then change FONT, FULLFONT and BASIC_FONT in init/init_default.txt and replace init/colors.txt if you like
CDDA: otfs go to /font, then change lines in config/fonts.json and replace config/base_colors.json
[!] Fonts wont scale so always set their nominal height and width in the settings

Preview:

DF with rc15:

CDDA with DF font in menu and rc11 in map:

Known problems with new graphical system as of 50.11:
* some UI parts and text dont support custom BLACK color in background
* without separate menu rendering new ribbon menu obscures stats info (mood indicators and stock counts) when using wide tilesets
* having graphics settings changed makes classic version revert to premium graphics on each restart

Thank you!

I've been looking for a good 15x15 (fits my screen perfectly) that looks close to the vanilla, but is crispier.

Very nice tileset!

i love it. I use r15x18 for twbt and r11 as main font

I dont know whether thats a good way but I like the faces most. A modern version of Lord Nightmare Cherry IBM 8x8.

Love the tileset, but... how would I go about making the faces more 'default' rather than evil looking?

Your tileset is the only ASCII tileset I've found that looks good on my 1920x1080p screen. It isn't horribly zoomed in, seems to be ASCII rather than simply based on ASCII, and other than my taste in regards to the smileys I'm loving it so far. I honestly don't understand how I haven't heard of this tileset before.

It's barely a year old, and never was promoted, so no wonder. Feel free to edit anything you dislike, or email me with your requests, and i'll send you back fixed files.

Changed brown color in the colorscheme due it's poor performance on dark backgrounds. To get updated replace this section

#brown_bramble_variation_592804
[BROWN_R:89]
[BROWN_G:40]
[BROWN_B:4]

with this one

#peru_tan_7f3a02
[BROWN_R:127]
[BROWN_G:58]
[BROWN_B:2]

in your data/init/colors.txt file

You are welcome, and good luck to you in your adventures. Hopefully i could help and make it more enjoyable.

In the meantime i am comtemplating some new and yet vague concepts, as the current achievments are seem to be more or less perfected. However, i'm not convinced that pushing classic-retro-character-based ideas is worthy. Need in such solutions never was substantial, and the upcoming graphical revolution may further lessen it.

ASCII lives in the new graphics era

* repackaged and restored orphaned dffd link
* new and better font generator
* updated fonts

There is few issues with the new graphics system, see topic starter
