Yeah I totally agree, 2d top-down style is absolutely perfect.

I wouldn't call sprites 3D, even if they are meant to show a 3D image.
But that's just me.

Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

I totally am for top down 2d graphics, a game in this style would be especially cool for this. 3d in most cases ruin the style and atmosphere of alot of games - unless you have fantastic resources and production values. I have seen this done and butchered many times before. Look at ultima online with 3d graphics - that is one butt ugly and lifeless adaption of a great 2d presentation.

I agree, it should stay top down. At least until Toady has nothing else to do. Though allowing 2d tiles would be a great intermediary.

I do not mind playing with ascii but I do prefer graphics, so long as they are clear, I find ascii looks so cluttered.

My monitor is flat? Are you sure?
It seems like its ~3x42x34 to me.

I think, since they also mentioned Falcon's Eye, that they mean that they were 3d renderings used to create 2d sprites. (At least, I think that is how Diablo characters were created.)

I HATE 2D isometric (IMO).  Ultima, Tibia, and Falcons Eye come to mind - yuck!  So please, don't go there Toady!

Also, I don't mind 3D so much, but that would take much more memory to download, and it would be harder to play "on-the-fly" at work or during a lunch break.  I think this game should be accessible to just about anyone, anytime.  Doing 3D would hurt that goal.

Okay, I just wanted to get that out of the way.   :)

Now if DF is going to go graphical it's going to have to be 2D top-down.  If I were to pick one game to emulate, graphically, it would definitely have to be IVAN.  I still think, however, that DF has to keep the code for color changes intact.  The changing colors of trees, blood splatters, rivers etc.. should still be dynamic.  I would hate to see this marvelous feature removed for static 2D sprites.

I was just thinking about that as I was watching a bunch of blue skeletal elephants  cross the river while charging my fortress...

They became shaded blue! Well, it wasn't that amazing, but I thought it was interesting at the time, and just remembered it now...

(On topic: For the record, all I wish Toady would add is enough support that people could make their own graphics- part of this support would definitely be variable tile numbers on screen- being fixed at 80 across is crazy... There's no way you can make remotely complicated tiles with that number...)

Edit: Well, the picture doesn't work... oh well...
Edit: Scratch that... it works...

There already is limited graphic support. Its not exactly what you want, but its pretty good so far IMO, even if I like ye old ascii look.

I think there is no need of tiles. And while playing IVAN i found myself want to zoom everthing and look at it, and zoomed its like a crappy 16x16 tile. Not fun at all. But I agree effects is good for tiled rogue-like. So my opinion - 3d or ASCII. With Mount&Blade as a good example of 3d indie game.

Everything I need from DF graphics - bigger game window so in 1600x1200 i will see x2.5 more territory istead of enormously stretched symbols.

And one more thing. Instead of making graphics some development time can be spent on cool sounds of screams, ripping flesh, hits and dismember.(something like in doom rl - well its pretty much sounds from doom2 but its cool) 3d sound is welcome too so i will instantly know where is the mess. =)
