Mostly I just want a method for killing them as soon as possible after they pull a lever, so they'll be lured by the lever, pull it, and die. Instantaneous would be best, but sadly you can't have an upright spike trap in the same position as a lever.

Something auto-resetting would be ideal.

How about this?
z+3:  support holding floor
z+2: 5x5 floating natural wall
z+1: 5x5 open space
z+0: lever in middle of room linked to Support in z+3

If you use minimum quality mechanisms, it might give them time to move away from the lever. You could make it say, 5 thick upright spikes all around. Or maybe set it so that the lever will trigger a minecart that makes field of spikes around the lever to go 5-10 times when pulled. Get him while he walks away.

Not resettable, and you lose the lever.

You could set up a lever in the middle of a long hallway. When the lever is pulled it activates two raising bridges that flip up and seal off the hallway and also activates a hatch that releases water/magma that fills the hallway until it drowns.  Build a second lever in your dining room that is also connected to the bridges and hatch so that any passing dwarf can reset the trap as they grab a snack.

Yup, a classic magma trap, except triggered from within.

As a bonus it makes for a good vampire, werewolf, and snotty noble disposal tool.

It can even quintuple as a forgotten beast trap if you put it in your fortress-to-cavern access tunnel ! Use the second lever to trigger it. (You need pretty good sense of timing, though)

If using magma, then the gremlin who pulled the trigger will be dead, so set a pressure plate to activate on 7/7 magma, which closes the hatch-magma source, and opens the raising bridges which have drains.

But it can be rebuilt, correct?  Replace the natural wall with a block floor (with an anvil stockpile on top!) and dwarves could rebuild it fairly quickly.

Rebuilt, but not reset. Rebuilding a trap takes way more time than resetting one, especially if you can make a trap auto-reset.

Dwarven way:

Make a walled area with a 1x5 or 1x8 open space in the middle and one opening. Place an open floodgate at the opening, and at the end of the space designate a 1 square pasture with the war animal of your choice. Place another floodgate in front of this pasture.

Connect the floodgate in front of the pasture to a lever. This lever should be as far inside the walled area as possible.
Place a locked door right behind the floodgate. Behind the locked door, place a one use pressure plate and connect it to the open floodgate.

The gremlin breaks in the door, which close the floodgate behind him, all in the pursuit of a lever that releases an animal that will instinctively attack. The locked door prevents nong remains from getting in.

Since we already produced an auto-resetting trap, I say we convert this to a Whiley Coyote trap thread!

It always comes back to anvils.

The closest thing to that contraption would be retracting bridge linked to a repeater, and lose anvils on that bridge near the lever.
