Justice needs some love
« on: May 13, 2016, 09:51:00 pm »

I'm still on 40.19, but I doubt its changed...
I'm trying to reach 1000 adult dwarfs, and the justice system has become almost impossible to use.
I have 2 vampires roaming around with 4 kills each.
I have 706 adults, 251 children, 19 babies. 976 total.
Add in 235 animals.
Add in dead animals.
Lets convict someone!! Yea right. It tests even my *patience*.

The convict screen shows only 10 names at a time. Oh joy!
It has no search function. Yay!! (Even my 8 Urists would fit, not to mention the nicknames Vamp1,Vamp2 )
It includes children.
It includes animals.
It includes dead versions of ALL the above. Really?!!
Have I sufficiently explained the problems?
 Solutions.
Enlarge the names list display.
Break the list into groups (adults, children, animals, dead)
In Armok's name at least add a search function!

If you'd care for an exercise in frustration, ill send the save.
Try to convict 1 vampire of 1 murder. Go ahead, it's easy.  :P

On the plus side:
976 dwarfs and I've only found 1 way to crash the game.
Designating too many 10*10 floors OR paved roads. Not sure why it does, so I just do 3 at a time. No biggie. I can drop idlers from 300+ down to 15, no problem, very nice to watch.
At 3 fps.   :o
I realize its too late for circa 40.19 Anvillocked, but future large forts would benefit. Greatly.

Quote edited for readability and my OCD.

I'm still playing v.0.40.19, but I doubt it's changed. I'm trying to reach one thousand adult dwarves, and the justice system has become almost impossible to use. I have two vampires roaming around with four kills each. I have seven hundred and six adults, two hundred and fifty-one children, and nineteen babies. Nine hundred and seventy-six citizens in total. Add in two hundred and thirty-five animals, plus any dead creatures. It is extremely tedious to convict someone. It tests even my patience.

The conviction screen shows only ten names at a time, and has no search function. It includes children and animals, as well as all dead creatures. Have I sufficiently explained the problems?

Solutions:

  • Enlarge the names list display.
  • Break the list into groups (adults, children, animals, dead).
  • Add a search function.[/size]

    Spoiler: irrelevant (click to show/hide)

I realize it's too late for circa v.0.40.19 Anvillocked, but future large fortresses would benefit greatly from this being fixed.
  • Many screens (e.g., trading) used to have a maximum size, and would not expand if the window itself was enlarged. Toady is gradually adding large-window support, so this problem will be somewhat fixed soon. Hopefully.
  • Groups sounds great.
  • Keep in mind that it may be important to find the correct person to convict - even if they are dead! So dead people are on the list, because otherwise you'd have to convict a random dwarf for the crimes Urist McVampire committed before his manual "unfortunate death".
  • You do realize that save compatibility means that you could port your old save file to 43.02, correct?

I only use my phone to read/post to the forums, so having my post reformatted is ok. As I read the edited version I noticed a few changes, I then read you're reply. Apparently I had not sufficiently explained the problem. The *patience* I have wears thin indeed.

You're 3rd reply. "Keep in mind It may be important to find the correct person to convict"
Wow, really?  Thank you for informing me, since that was a main point of my post!! (Finding 2 vampires) Guess you were too busy reformatting/editing to notice?

As for being "able" to upgrade a 14 month 40.19 fort to 43.02 Why didn't I think of that...
Why risk it for features I wont be able to use? Not to mention the flaming fun that such a move would unleash "if" it worked. Brilliant advice that.

1. Read the entire sentence. I said "it's important to find the correct person even if they are dead." I was explaining why dead creatures were on the list.

2. It is safe. Check the wiki. DF is save-compatible from 40.03. You can even keep a backup if you're so concerned.

I thought you said you were fine with the edits. I spent time making the edits and then I was able to read it and give a good response. The edits did not take time away from my response - they improved it, as I would've otherwise been distracted by the formatting.

Next time I might not even try to give useful feedback, knowing the response I'd get.

Oh, I read the whole sentence. I hadn't asked "why" the dead were there. The dead are at "the bottom" of the list, its a 30+ year old fort, I'm not going to hold the up arrow to slog thru it. That leaves stright down, with dwarfs in no apparent order. Hence my explaination of the problems was not sufficient.
The wiki crashes my phones browser, so I can't check save compatibility. Pretty sure I wouldn't have many new features with a 40.19 world gen, right?
Anvillocked is a dead is dead fort, there is no backup.

I never said I was fine with edits..I said I was ok with reformatting.
You didn't notice "the flaming fun such a move would unleash" I meant forum fun. Ingame would have been "the !!fun!! such a move......" oh well I tried.  :P

I somewhat misunderstood your post, and thought that you did not understand the necessity of dead creatures being included in the justice screen. It was just a "in case you didn't know" thing. It did not need that level of sarcasm. (I probably shouldn't have responded in such a hostile way, though.)

On the topic of save compatibility, I have never heard of bugs induced by upgrading to a new version. If you want to be safe, upgrade to v.0.42.06 until v.0.43.XX has been suitably bug-fixed.

Also note that the great Toad himself recommends keeping backups, because if you don't, one corrupted save can ruin months of playing. You don't have to use it to cheat.

((I'm somewhat sorry for the mild swearing, and will remove it.))

After dealing with the list, I was kinda like gas and you're post a lit match.

If an upgrade were successful, a 40.19 world wouldn't have musical instruments, the dance forms books, and other things, probably. No induced bugs, by the process, that I know of.
It's simply not worth it. I'm just trying to reach 1000 dwarfs.

I don't keep backups, if it crashes or !!fun!! ensues early,THEN ill update.

I'm exmilitary and an extruckdriver. There was swearing? Ill take you're word for it!!

Hah! No hard feelings then.

On topic again:

I think that if the screen allowed you to either select types of creatures (dead, adult, child) or let you toggle which was visible, along with a search function both with English translations and un-special-characters-ified Dwarven, this problem would be mostly fixed, but the ability to "highlight" a dwarf and have him appear in a special "highlighted" group or at the top of his group would apply to more situations than just justice.

On the topic of save compatibility, some bugfixes apply to updated saves.

Even if the list would stay "locked" on the last entity convicted. ( say Vamp1) it would ease the pain of finding "entities" that need multiple convictions. Read vampires!!

Next game I start vampires will be off, that's for sure. ( unless justice gets serious love in an update!!)

Unrelated : the elves brought only logs and 8 food items to trade 978 urists worth.
then in summer the humans brought only logs and a bit more food!! About 9000 worth.
Somethings up, I've never heard of such a thing.
I "may" have found an exploit involving paving/unpaving the map.
not intended, but ill buy every log they bring, and pay with xsocksx  ;)

Ill ask in gameplay.
